How is the 2022 Hyundai Elantra so efficient?

2022 Hyundai Elantra

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra is the most fuel-efficient gasoline-powered vehicle in the sub-compact sedan segment, and its hybrid version is even more efficient. Here are some of the technologies that help it lower its fuel consumption.

The hybrid system

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra is offered with a hybrid powertrain that can boast about having the lowest fuel consumption figures on the highway than the other hybrid vehicles in its class, while having more power than most of its competitors. The 1.6L direct fuel-injected four-cylinder engine is paired with an electric motor and a battery in order to further diminish the fuel consumption. This works by allowing the gasoline engine to remain stopped for longer periods of time, since it doesn’t need to be used every time the vehicle moves. Indeed, the electric motor is capable of powering the Elantra Hybrid at slow speeds and on short distances. In order to provide adequate performances and a more traditional feel, the 139 combined horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque from the system goes through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) that provides quick and positive shifts which enhance the vehicle’s performance.

The IVT transmission

The gasoline powered Elantra makes use of a 2.0L engine that uses many relatively recent technologies itself, such as the start/stop system and the direct fuel-injection (GDI). This engine is coupled to an IVT transmission which is able to constantly vary the engine’s speed in order to maintain it at the most efficient operating speed for every situation. This makes the 2022 Hyundai Elantra the most economical non-hybrid vehicles of its segment, with official figures that read 7.6 L/100 km in the city and only 5.7 L/100 km on the highway. Another thing that helps with the fuel efficiency is the selectable drive mode system, which allows the driver to choose between a couple of different driving modes, including the Eco mode.
