Hyundai’s Electrified Streamliner Sedan, the IONIQ 6

IONIQ 6

The hits just keep on coming for Hyundai’s all-EV Ioniq line; just a few short months after the Ioniq 5 crossover was wining awards, they’re back at it with this: The Ioniq 6 Electrified Streamliner sedan.

“Sedan” is a little unfair here, though, as the Streamliner’s ultra slippery shape is a far cry from the three-box design sedans have been known for. This is a four-door, but thanks to its very aggressive roofline and rear deck it draws a more four-door-coupe silhouette.

The design helps achieve ultra low-drag performance and return a range of over 610 kilometres from its 77.4 kWh battery. A 53 kWh battery with RWD is also available but 610 clicks! Hard to justify needing much more than that…

When you do eventually run out, meanwhile, expect charge times of 18 minutes to get from 10 to 80 per cent. Not too shabby at all.

Inside, the space has been configured to achieve maximum driver and passenger comfort with thin front seatbacks, adjustable steering and accelerator pedal sensitivity and even how quickly the motor deploys power. Add customizable two-colour ambient lighting that changes depending on how much speed your carrying, and you have a veritable lounge on wheels. Just keep the drinks alcohol-free, okay?

While drivers won’t be able to just sit back and enjoy their non-alcoholic beverages while on the rad as the Ioniq 6 is no autonomous car, the multitude of drive aids it has on-hand bring it close. You have features like lane-keep and centering assist as well as speed limit-sensitive cruise control, but there’s also junction assist which ensure you proceed through intersections as carefully as possible thanks to the car’s ability to sense oncoming traffic from a multitude of directions. If you think you can make that left turn but the system doesn’t, it will stop you from doing so with automatic emergency braking. If you try and change lanes when you really shouldn’t, it will steer you out of trouble without even having to activate cruise control.

This and a whole lot more is coming when the Ioniq 6 starts production in the third quarter of 2022, and we’ll be sure to tell you all about it!
