A Look at the 2024 Hyundai Kona
The Hyundai Kona enters a completely new generation for the 2024 model year by receiving extensive appearance and technology changes that make it one of the most modern options in its segment.
A bold new design
The Hyundai Kona has always been a distinctive small SUV, and this is certainly still the case with the 2024 version. Indeed, the new Kona kept some of the previous model’s distinguishing features such as the separated headlamps and taillamps, the overall shape, and the location of the charging port on the electric version. This allows the new model to still be recognizable as a Kona despite the extensive changes that took place to keep it in line with newer Hyundai models. Indeed, the 2024 Kona also takes elements from the Tucson, such as the “Z” shaped body creases in the doors, and the Ioniq 5, such as the Pixel LED lighting units fitted to the electric model. Unique to the Kona are the front and rear lightbars as well as the interior.
A much more modern product
The 2024 Hyundai Kona benefits from all of the latest technologies found in the brand’s newer models, including larger screens for the infotainment system and the digital instrument cluster. This means that the new Kona can now receive over-the-air updates to remain current for many years after the initial purchase, and it also means that the new model offers a full list of active safety and driver assistance systems. Unlike many other automakers, however, Hyundai doesn’t believe in integrating all of the controls inside of the touchscreen. Indeed, removing physical buttons is a safety risk since drivers need to take their eyes of the road for longer to operate basic functions of the vehicle. This is why the new Kona continues to offer buttons and dials to control the audio system and the climate control system even if it is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies.
Engineered as an EV first
The 2024 Hyundai Kona continues to be offered in either gasoline or electric forms, but unlike previously, the new model has been engineered from the ground up as an electric vehicle and the provisions for the fuel tank and the engine have been added to the design later. This contributes to making the new version more efficient than the previous model in electric form, with a range estimated at 490 kilometres according to the WLTP method. Also new for 2024 is the addition of a hybrid model that can bridge the gap between full gasoline and fully electric vehicles for buyers who aren’t quite ready to step into an EV. Canadian specifications for all three versions are expected to be released closer to the launch in our market which should happen later this year.
